ABP Appoints Herman Bril as CIO

The $607 billion Dutch pension had been without a permanent CIO since 2024.

Dutch pension fund Stichting Pensioenfonds ABP appointed Herman Bril as its new CIO and executive director of investments. ABP announced Bril’s appointment in December 2025, and it became effective on January 1.  

Bril succeeds Jack Julicher, who had served as interim executive director of investments since March 1, 2025. The fund’s previous permanent CIO, Rianne Lemson, departed in October 2024.  

Previously, Bril was the head of sustainability and climate innovation at Canada’s PSP Investments and was CIO and head of the United Nations Joint Pension Fund’s Office of Investment Management 

Bril earned a master of economics degree in financial economics from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, a master’s degree in sustainability leadership from the University of Cambridge and is a Ph.D. candidate in financial economics at the Nyenrode Business University.

ABP managed 520 billion euros in assets as of April 24, 2025. The fund provides retirement benefits to Netherlands residents in the government and education sectors.
