Northern Trust Asset Management announced Wednesday the appointment of Anne-Sophie van Royen to the new role of head of index and quantitative strategies.

Van Royen will lead the strategic direction, commercial development and execution of the firm’s index and quantitative investment capabilities across equity, fixed-income and multi-asset solutions, according to a statement from Northern Trust.

Based in Chicago, van Royen will report to global Co-CIOs Anwiti Bahuguna and Christian Roth. Northern Trust managed $923 billion in index strategies, $47 billion in quantitative strategies and $1.4 trillion in total assets, as of March 31.

The role is new, a spokesperson for Northern Trust said. Van Royen was previously CIO of quantitative strategies at Asset Management One USA.

“Anne-Sophie is a proven builder of systematic platforms, with deep expertise spanning index, quantitative and total portfolio solutions,” Bahuguna said in a statement. “Her track record of combining rigorous research with disciplined implementation will help us continue to innovate and deliver efficient solutions for clients.”

Before working at Asset Management One, van Royen was a senior managing director and head of quantitative equity at La Caisse, a tactical asset allocation adviser at the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, head of quantitative trading at UBS, principal and founding partner in multi-strategy systematic hedge fund Modus Quantitative Advisors, head of quant global macro at Credit Suisse, and a vice president of asset allocation at Columbia Asset Management.

“Index and quantitative strategies are foundational building blocks in portfolios, and we see strong client demand for approaches that pair precision with thoughtful risk management,” Roth said in a statement. “Anne-Sophie brings a deep appreciation of evolving client needs with the technical depth to deliver solutions.”

Van Royen earned a B.A. in psychology and an M.A. in business from HEC Paris, as well as an M.S. and a Ph.D. in mathematical economics from the University of Paris-Sorbonne.
