Nuveen announced on Monday the appointment of Geremy Kawaller as head of institutional distribution in the Americas, leading institutional coverage across all non-insurance clients in the U.S. and Canada for the $1.4 trillion asset manager.

Kawaller joins Nuveen from BlackRock, where he most recently led institutional client relations with public and corporate pension funds as head of pensions for the Central Region.

At Nuveen, Kawaller will lead distribution strategies with Tier 1 asset allocators and other key strategic clients. The role is a newly created one, according to a spokesperson for Nuveen. Kawaller will report to Harriet Steel, the firm’s global head of institutional distribution.

“Nuveen’s U.S. institutional business has been a true engine of growth, and we look forward to building on this momentum with Geremy at the helm,” Steel said in a statement. “His deep experience leading high-performing teams and delivering results across public markets and alternatives makes him exceptionally well suited to advance our distribution strategy and deepen relationships with the most important allocators in the Americas.”

Before joining BlackRock in 2013, Kawaller was a director of business development at VelocityShares. He also held senior roles at Barclays Capital, CA Technologies and Ernst & Young.

Kawaller earned a bachelor of arts degree in liberal arts from Columbia University and an MBA in finance from the Stern School of Business at New York University.
