Led by double-digit gains from both domestic and foreign equities, Japan’s Government Pension Investment Fund raked in a robust 8.2% return during the first quarter of 2026, raising its asset value to 320.373 trillion yen ($2.01 trillion), according to the fund’s quarterly update. The fund remains one of the two largest in the world, along with Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global.

Foreign equities were the GPIF’s top performer in Q1 with a 16.94% return, followed by its domestic equity portfolio, which returned 14.48%. Domestic bond holdings gained 3.13%, while foreign bond investments declined by 1.15%.

Despite leading the pension giant’s results, foreign equities was the only asset class that did not outperform its benchmark, which posted a 17.56% return. While the remaining asset classes topped their respective benchmarks, none did so by more than 10 basis points.

Despite the outsized equity gains during the quarter, the GPIF’s asset allocation remained closely aligned with its target policy portfolio, which mandates a 25% allocation to each of the four asset classes. As of the end of June, the fund’s portfolio consisted of 25.59% domestic bonds, 25.33% foreign equities, 24.60% foreign bonds and 24.48% domestic equities.

Since the GPIF began independently managing Japan’s public pension in 2001, it has generated about 221 trillion yen in cumulative investment gains.
