The Alberta Investment Management Corp. announced Tuesday the appointment of Ron Helmhold and Hugh O’Reilly to the pension fund’s board of directors, with both terms running through September 2, 2029.
Both individuals have held senior leadership roles at other Canadian pension and benefit funds during their careers. O’Reilly was president and CEO of pension fund OPTrust between 2014 and 2019. Helmhold was the chief financial officer of the Alberta Workers’ Compensation Board from 2006 until 2026.
“A strong and effective board is essential to supporting AIMCo’s mandate,” said Stephen Harper, AIMCo’s board chair and a former Canadian prime minister, in a statement. “I am pleased to welcome Ron Helmhold and Hugh O’Reilly to the board. Their experience and commitment will help ensure AIMCo remains well positioned to serve its clients and stakeholders.”
AIMCo is a provincial crown corporation owned by the province of Alberta. It manages C$210.7 billion ($152.48 billion) in assets and invests on behalf of the institutional funds in the province.
The appointments follow a November 2024 shakeup of the pension fund’s management and leadership, when Alberta’s United Conservative Party government removed the entire board of AIMCo and its CEO following concerns around the pension fund’s costs. Harper was soon named as the board’s new chair, and he has since been reappointed to the board as chair through November 19, 2028.
In July 2025, Justin Lord, formerly AIMCO’s head of public markets, was named CIO. The previous CIO, Marlene Puffer, had left in September 2024, prior to the governmental intervention. Her responsibilities were divided between Lord and David Scudellar, AIMCo’s global head of private assets and strategic partnerships.
