The Investment Company Institute, which represents the global asset management industry, announced Monday that its president and CEO, Eric Pan, plans to step down after leading the organization for six years.

By the ICI’s Board of Governors’ request, Pan has agreed to stay until his successor can be found, with the intention of leaving by June 30, 2027, according to the announcement.

“Being the head of ICI has been a remarkable role for which I am grateful for the opportunity, but I never wanted to make this role the last position of my career. Six years is a long time for a CEO,” Pan said, in a statement. “I want to now build upon my wonderful experience at ICI and pursue new opportunities while I still can.”

Pan’s tenure at the ICI included the 2025 advocacy campaign “Help U.S. Retire,” which sent 11,000 letters asking Congress to not limit retirement account tax-breaks. He also led the “Reimagining the 1940 Act” initiative in 2025, which backed amendments to securities regulations such as allowing for dual-share-class funds, or launching exchange-traded-fund share classes within existing mutual fund portfolios.

“Eric has been a tireless advocate for our industry and the millions of Americans who depend on it to achieve their financial goals,” said Andrew Schlossberg, chair of ICI’s Board of Governors and president and CEO of Invesco, in the announcement. “His vision and determination have strengthened ICI, elevated our voice in critical policy debates and positioned the organization for continued success.”

Pan also chairs the International Investment Funds Association, a Toronto-based organization of national and regional associations representing investment funds. IIFA did not respond immediately to an inquiry about whether Pan will remain as chair.

Pan previously served as the director of the Office of International Affairs at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and head of international regulatory policy at the Securities and Exchange Commission. He also was a managing director of Rock Creek Global Advisors LLC, a Washington-based international economic advisory firm, and director of the Heyman Center on Corporate Governance. He is an adjunct professor at Columbia Law School in New York and received an A.B. from Harvard College, M.Sc from the University of Edinburgh and J.D. from Harvard Law School.
