Barings Hires Ex-Schroders CEO as CIO

Ken Lambden, former chief of Schroders’ Australian business, will replace current CIO Marino Valensise at Barings Asset Management.

Barings Asset Management has picked up two of Schroders’ senior investment managers to head up its business in London.

The firm announced it has appointed Ken Lambden as its CIO effective September 16. He will be based in London and report to David Brennan, Barings’ chairman and CEO.

Lambden was most recently CEO of Schroders’ Australian business in charge of equities, fixed income, and multi-asset teams. He also served as global head of equities managing £90 billion of assets at Europe’s second largest asset manager for nine years.

A veteran with more than 20 years of experience, Lambden also headed Australian equities at Australia and New Zealand Banking Group. He earned a bachelor’s degree in commerce from the University of Melbourne.

Lambden will be replacing current CIO Marino Valensise who has served the role for seven years, Barings said.

Valensise will instead move to head the firm’s multi-asset group, effective immediately, following Percival Stanion’s resignation. He will also become chairman of Barings’ strategic policy group responsible for asset allocation strategies.

“It is a natural fit for Marino to assume leadership of our multi-asset franchise ensuring continuity of investment approach and insight across the portfolios,” Brennan said in a statement.

Stanion’s departure is the latest of a number of exits from Barings’ multi-asset group. The firm announced investment managers Andrew Cole and Shaniel Ramjee have also resigned.

Barings also hired Sonja Laud, a fund manager of Schroders’ global equity income business, to the position of multi-asset income investment manager. Laud will manage five global equity funds in London and will report to Valensise.
