Ontario Teachers’ London Office Seeks Private Equity Head

The $109 billion pension fund is looking to hire a new senior principal as it continues its expansion in the EMEA region.

The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan is interviewing for a senior position within its London office.

According to the job posting, the C$154.5 billion ($108.5 billion) fund is seeking a senior principal to lead its private equity investments in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA).

The new hire would serve as part of Ontario Teachers’ global funds team and report to Tornoto-based director Tanya Carmichael. The role will function as the primary point of contact for partner relationships and investment opportunities in the EMEA region.

The ideal candidate will be a “team player” with “extensive experience” in private equity fund investing, as well as have a “strong understanding” of limited partnership agreements and business, governance, and regulatory issues. Applicants should also have “disciplined thinking, sound judgment, and courage of conviction” in addition to being able to take a “balanced risk,” the fund said.  

The private equity chief will be expected to to promote alignment of interest and good governance by actively participating in industry initiatives such as the Institutional Limited Partners Association, which launched a fee transparency initiative in September. Other responsibilities include leading manager due diligence and discovering direct and co-investing opportunities with EMEA fund partners. 

Ontario Teachers’ established the UK office in 2007, and has been expanding its presence there since. Jo Taylor—promoted as head of the London office at the end of 2014—serves as managing director for the region, heading the fund’s EMEA investments.

 

The fund recently appointed Bjarne Graven Larsen as its new CIO to replace Neil Petroff following his retirement last year. The former ATP investment chief is to begin his new post on February 1.
