The San Diego Foundation, a $1.8 billion foundation which provides grants to nonprofits in San Diego County, California, announced Thursday that CIO Matt Fettig will also become the organization’s chief financial officer.
The foundation will combine its investment and financial functions “to strengthen coordination, accountability and long-term sustainability,” according to the announcement.
In the dual role, Fettig will lead investment strategy and financial operations. Fettig will succeed James Howell, who had served as CFO since 2015. Howell stepped away to focus on several investment and board advisory initiatives, while also prioritizing time with family, a spokesperson for the foundation said.
“I’m honored to take on this expanded role at a moment when patience, discipline and long-term thinking matter deeply,” Fettig said in a statement. “We will ensure SDF remains a steady partner to donors and nonprofits serving San Diegans for the long term.”
The foundation’s primary endowment portfolio, managed internally, has returned 10.5%, 12.4%, 10.3% and 9% over the past one, three, five and 10 years, respectively, annualized.
Fettig has served as CIO of the foundation for more than 12 years and has overseen its assets growing to $1.8 billion from $612 million. Fettig was previously director of manager research and partner in Canterbury Consulting. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in economics from the University of California, Berkeley.
