The University of North Carolina Management Co., which manages the endowment and affiliated funds of the UNC system, announced Monday the appointment of Stefan Strein as president, CEO and CIO of the $14 billion fund.

Strein, who became the Cleveland Clinic’s first internal CIO in 2015, will succeed Jonathon King, who announced his retirement in August 2025 after 20 years in the role.

“I am honored and excited to join UNCMC as its President, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer,” Strein said in a statement. “I am eager to lead the team of outstanding professionals at UNCMC and build upon the excellence and success they’ve enjoyed in long-term partnerships with world class investment firms. I am deeply committed to mission-based organizations that have a positive impact on humanity and look forward to advancing UNCMC’s role in supporting the institutions across the University of North Carolina system.”

As CIO of the Cleveland Clinic, Strein built out and trained an investment team that now numbers 23 people and has produced at least eight future CIOs. Strein oversaw $17 billion in investments at Cleveland Clinic, as well as $16 billion in defined contribution retirement assets.

Strein joined Cleveland Clinic after the health care system insourced its investments, switching from an outsourced CIO model. Strein was also vice president and CIO of the $2.7 billion Annie E. Casey Foundation between 2005 and 2015.

Strein was awarded CIO’s 2025 Versatility Award and was named a winner in the health care/hospital plans category in CIO’s 2024 Industry Innovation Awards.

“We are thrilled to welcome Stefan to UNCMC. Stefan brings with him deep investment and institutional expertise cultivated from decades of experience in the investment industry,” said UNCMC Board Chair Michael Kennedy in a statement. “Stefan’s investment acumen, demonstrated leadership in talent development, and well-established credibility within the investment industry will allow him to build on [the UNC Investment Fund’s] strong track record of outstanding absolute and relative performance.”
