The San Bernadino County Employees’ Retirement Association announced Monday the promotion of Senior Investment Officer Thomas Kim to deputy CIO, a newly created role at the $16 billion public pension fund.
According to a statement from SBCERA, the role is “designed to support the long-term leadership and succession planning of our investment program.” SBCERA CIO Donald Pierce announced in January that he will retire later this year after 25 years at the fund.
Kim will help lead the execution of SBCERA’s investment strategy, and he will work with the investment team to ensure continuity in the fund’s investment operations.
“It has been a privilege to serve SBCERA and its members,” Pierce said in a statement. “I’m proud of the investment program we’ve built, the strategies we’ve thoughtfully introduced, and—most importantly—the highly skilled team that will carry this work forward. Thomas is an outstanding investment professional and leader, and I have great confidence in his ability to help guide our program into the future.”
SBCERA stated in January that the fund anticipated an internal successor to Pierce. Kim, who joined SBCERA in 2020, was one of three senior investment officers at the fund, including Amit Thanki and Jake Abott, who joined SBCERA in 2012 and 2015, respectively.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve SBCERA and support the long-term financial security of our members and beneficiaries,” Kim said in a statement. “I look forward to building on the strong foundation of our investment program and continuing to work alongside our talented investment team, leadership, and Board to support SBCERA’s mission.”
Prior to joining SBCERA as an investment officer and rising to become a senior investment officer in 2023, Kim was an equity analyst at multiple firms, including HBK Capital Management, Millennium Management, MP Capital Management and Vardon Capital Management.
He earned a bachelor of arts degree in economics from Yale University and an MBA in finance from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Kim was named to CIO’s NextGen class of 2023.
