Tarek Saghir
The University of California, Berkeley announced Monday the appointment of Tarek Saghir as CIO of the Berkeley Endowment Management Co., which oversees endowment funds of the UC Berkeley Foundation.
Saghir, who has been CIO of the $1.36 billion Brandeis University endowment since 2021, will take up his new position on August 3.
He will oversee $3.4 billion of assets gifted to UC Berkeley, which has a total of $8.5 billion in assets, including $5.1 billion managed by the UC Board of Regents office. CIO Jagdeep Bachher leads those efforts to oversee $190 billion of the University of California system’s investments.
“Tarek combines intellectual horsepower, demonstrated investment skill, an empathetic approach to team leadership, and a deep belief in Berkeley’s mission,” said Cyrus Hadidi, chair of BEMCO’s board of directors, in a statement. “We are excited for the next era of BEMCO under Tarek’s leadership.”
Before joining Brandeis, Saghir was a principal in alternative investment manager GroveStreet, where he focused on investing and co-investing in buyouts, growth equity and venture capital. He was also a public market investor for the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and a consultant at McKinsey & Co.
“It’s a storied institution that plays an incredibly important role as an engine of social mobility,” Saghir said of the Berkeley endowment in a statement. “There is so much opportunity open to BEMCO and Berkeley, and I look forward to seizing it,” including investment opportunities provided by the university’s established record of innovation and entrepreneurship. “It’s a very exciting charge, with a great cause.”
Saghir earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Toronto, an MBA from Harvard University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
