The University of Iowa Center for Advancement, the foundation for the University of Iowa, announced Monday that it has tapped Northern Trust family office investor Daniel Gottlieb as CIO effective February 23.

Gottlieb will succeed Jim Bethea, who served as vice president and CIO of the UICA for 15 years, until he departed in 2025 for the CIO role at the West Virginia University Foundation.

In his current role as senior client officer in Northern Trust’s Global Family Office outsourced CIO team, Gottlieb oversees $6 billion in assets across ultra-high-net worth families and private foundations.

UICA managed $1.8 billion in investment assets as of June 30, 2025. The endowment has an asset allocation policy of 40% to equities, 25% to fixed income, 10% to real estate, and 25% to private markets.

“Daniel has a proven track record of helping organizations grow and manage permanent capital while staying true to mission and values—and this aligns well with our said,” says Marty Nevshemal, chief operating officer of the UI Center for Advancement, in a statement.

Gottlieb’s appointment will coincide with UICA opening an office in Chicago for its investment team, the university said in a statement.

Before Northern Trust, Gottlieb served as director of investments and later CIO of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, where he helped build the tribe’s first investment committee and its investment management team.

Gottlieb holds a bachelor of arts degree in religion from Swarthmore College and an MBA from the Yale School of Management.
