The Macquarie Group Ltd. and Singapore’s sovereign fund, GIC Private Ltd., announced Monday a strategic partnership with frontier artificial intelligence lab Anthropic PBC to operate and lease data center infrastructure, with Anthropic as an anchor tenant.
The partnership—which will operate under the name Theseus Infrastructure—will be owned and funded by funds managed by Macquarie Asset Management with the GIC, then leased to Anthropic.
No figure for the parties’ total investment amount was provided, but a joint announcement noted that “the planned developments will require significant capital investment.”
The partnership is buying into the massive capital spending needed to support the build-out of digital infrastructure. According to consulting firm McKinsey & Co., global spending on digital infrastructure development could reach $7 trillion by 2030.
The GIC also has invested in several data center partnerships—including Vantage Data Centers and a joint venture with the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Equinix.
Macquarie has invested tens of billions of dollars in data center projects from Aligned Data Centers, a company the firm acquired in 2018 and sold for $40 billion this year, as well as in Applied Digital and AirTrunk.
Anthropic, in a statement about the partnership, stated that demand for its AI agent, Claude, “continues to grow rapidly across businesses, developers, and consumers, and meeting that demand requires significant new [computing power.] Anthropic is partnering with Macquarie Asset Management and GIC, drawing on Macquarie’s global expertise developing, financing, and operating large-scale digital infrastructure, and GIC’s deep experience investing in infrastructure around the world.”
