The $2.7 billion Boston Foundation announced the appointment of Natalie Herter as CIO, succeeding George Wilson, who will retire from the CIO position after 18 years. Wilson announced his plans to retire in April.

Herter’s appointment is effective September 2. She will work with Wilson to ensure an orderly transition, a statement from the foundation said.

She was selected from more than 160 applicants during a search led by recruitment firm Korn Ferry, according to a statement from the foundation.

Herter joins the Boston Foundation from Mount Holyoke College’s investment office. She also previously spent more than a decade at Cambridge Associates, most recently as managing director and investment team leader in the firm’s endowment and foundation practice.

“We are truly thrilled to welcome Natalie Herter as our new chief investment officer,” said Brian Douglas, chief financial officer of the Boston Foundation, in a statement. “While we were fortunate to have an exceptionally strong and deep pool of candidates, Natalie’s combination of deep and relevant experience, her investment acumen and her engaging interpersonal style make her an ideal choice for the role.”

Herter earned a bachelor’s degree from Middlebury College.
