Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney named executive and investment manager Mark Wiseman as Canada’s next ambassador to the United States on Monday.
“Mark Wiseman brings immense experience, extensive contacts, and deep commitment at this crucial time of transformation of our relationship with the United States,” Carney said in announcing the appointment. “As a core member of our negotiating team, he will help advance the interests of Canadian workers, businesses, and institutions, while building opportunities for both Canada and the United States.”

Wiseman is scheduled to become ambassador on February 15, 2026, according to the prime minister’s statement.
In that role, Wiseman will be “a key contributor to the government’s efforts to advance Canada-U.S. priorities,” as the countries reassess the 2020 Canada-U.S.-Mexico trade agreement, which is subject to a joint review starting in July 2026. According to Carney’s statement about Wiseman, he will focus on such areas as “secure borders, a strengthened trade and investment relationship, and cooperation between Canada and the United States on global challenges.”
Wiseman was president and CEO of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board from 2012 through 2015 before leaving in 2016 to join BlackRock as a senior managing director. Wiseman then served as chairman of the board of the Alberta Investment Management Corp. from mid-2020 to 2023. He is a current member of the “Prime Minister’s Council on Canada-U.S. Relations.”
Most recently, Wiseman served as board chairman for Luxembourg-based Alter Domas and Calgary-based NOVA Chemicals. His positions at BlackRock included global head of active equities and chairman of BlackRock Alternative Investors, along with serving on the firm’s global investment and global executive committees.
