Jun Yang
Rockefeller University named Jun Yang as its next CIO, succeeding Paula Volent effective July 1. Volent, who had been CIO since 2021, will step into a part-time advisory role.
Yang joins New York-based Rockefeller from Oberlin College in Ohio, where he had been CIO of the institution’s $1.48 billion investment office since 2019. He was previously a senior investment officer at the Weizmann Institute of Science and an investment consultant to the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
The Rockefeller University is a graduate-only university with a focus on biological and medical sciences. The investment office of the university supports its research mission through support of its annual operating budget.
“Jun is an exceptional investment leader whose experience, judgment, and track record make him uniquely suited to guide Rockefeller’s endowment into its next chapter,” said Rockefeller University President Richard Lifton in a statement. “At a moment when the funding environment for science faces growing uncertainty, the stewardship of our endowment has never been more important. We are grateful for Paula’s years of outstanding service, and are delighted to welcome Jun to the university, providing a smooth transition and continued strength in this vital role.”
Yang earned a bachelor of engineering degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and an MBA from the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University.
“Rockefeller occupies a unique place in the scientific world, and I am honored by the opportunity to join an institution with such an extraordinary history of discovery and impact,” Yang said in a statement. “I am excited to help steward the university’s endowment in service of Rockefeller’s mission, and I am fortunate to inherit a high-performing investment program built by Paula Volent, whose leadership has positioned the endowment for continued success.”
A previous version of this story misstated Paula Volents’ tenure at The Rockefeller University.
